I’m back! My social media break, which was intended to be just a short one, turned into a month-long silence on the blog and on Instagram, which is why I feel that it demands a proper explanation. Also, there are lots of changes ahead, so get yourself a cup of tea and read on.
My social media break
Sometimes you need some time and space to really figure out who you are and what you want, and this was very much the case for me back in December 2017. I had not felt like posting on the blog for a while anyway, and Instagram also felt more like a chore than anything else. I had a terribly rough year (or two) behind me and studying was also taking its toll on me. It seemed like life was hitting me from all sides, so it was time to prioritise. I figured that I would get back to social media and blogging once the time felt right but I didn’t imagine it would take me almost half a year. I think it was partly because after a few months I didn’t quite know how to even get started anymore.
The Little House in Utrecht had been mainly about interior décor and hotspots, because at the time it had felt more logical to focus on a couple of subjects and try to find my niche, as all those blogging guides tell you to do. However, I have a very wide array of interests and to me, focusing on interior décor alone felt terribly limiting. As much as I love interior décor, there were other things that I felt much more passionately about, and I need to love what I’m doing or it’s no longer a fun hobby. So, I figured that if I was going to start blogging and instagramming again, I would have to change things up a bit.
Changes, changes, oh so many changes
Fortunately, life has a funny way of figuring itself out. As it happens, a month or so ago, my boyfriend and I decided that we were going to sell our home in Utrecht and start looking for something else. From August onward, I am no longer tied to Utrecht for my study (as I will be doing my internship in Amsterdam), so it felt like the right moment to move on to the next phase in our lives. So, this summer we will be moving away from Utrecht, and for blogging purposes this gives me the perfect opportunity to rebrand and to start afresh.
Het Finse Meisje
I study marketing and branding, so rebranding the blog and my social media is an interesting task from that perspective as well. Where the Little House in Utrecht had always been what I felt that I should be doing, this new start would have to reflect what I want to do. After doing some blogger to blogger brainstorming with my friend Hayley, I decided that the blog’s name should also reflect who I am. That is how I settled on “Het Finse Meisje” – the Finnish girl – as that is very much who I am. A Finnish girl in the Netherlands, who likes interior décor, good food, traveling, fashion, makeup, politics and singing along to Disney movies. Amongst other things. Mixing so many topics might not be what the blogging guides recommend but I honestly couldn’t care less.
For the first time in a long while I actually feel excited about blogging, and I hope that you will also have fun reading my posts. If you are mainly interested in interior décor, don’t worry, the topic will still feature very strongly on the blog. My boyfriend and I will be doing a complete renovation of our new home in the coming months so there is plenty to write about.
I can’t wait to share all the exciting things with you so stay tuned!
