Hello! Welcome to Little House in Utrecht, a blog about home décor and the life I lead in our little home in Utrecht. Please get a cup of tea and get reading so we can get to know each other better!
Who Am I?
I’m a Finnish girl in my early twenties (though closer to my mid-twenties than my teenage years) and I study International Communication and Media here in Utrecht. You can call me Senja. I share a home with my darling Dutchman and two ragdoll cats Bonzo & Audrey. We like cosy evenings at home (especially the mister and the cats) and eating well, though you may also find me checking out interesting spots in Utrecht and beyond.
Our home is a small one: a 47 square meter ground floor apartment of a 1940s townhouse. We also have a much larger garden and nice upstairs neighbours. We moved into our home in the summer of 2015, after a lengthy road trip from Helsinki and months of renovating. Before we moved in the place was in a dire need of some vision and care so that is what we gave to it… or in this case, it was the mister and his family that did the hard work while I stayed in my role as the planner. Thus we said goodbye to the tiny kitchen and weird hallway without a purpose and hello to a large open plan living area with a kitchen and a tiny bedroom. (can’t have it all!)
Why Little House in Utrecht?
I love home décor. Even as a kid I used to browse through tons of interior design magazines and imagine what my dream home would be like. The dream home has looked very different through the course of time but the passion for beautiful things has not changed one bit. Nor has the core need to have a place to call your own, place that will make you feel like you belong.
My house and I have yet to get to the point where I feel like I totally belong but we certainly are getting to know each other, for the lack of a better term. So far our house has shown its flaws and some of its good points but as with any relationship, true bonding takes time. Sometimes you also have to go away to see what you have, which in my case was during my two-week trip to visit family and friends in Finland. I missed this little house (and the ones I share it with of course) and that, amongst other things, has given me the boost to start this blog.
I want to share this love story with you. All of the dreams and inspiration that come with it. All the joy, laughter and good things that stay with you for years to come. The crazy and silly stories about the moments you can’t find funny when they happen but will make you laugh afterwards. That is Little House in Utrecht, and this is where it begins. I hope you will join! Please don’t hesitate to comment, I would love to get to know you better!
